Today we had a customer (a photographer) who popped into our store looking for a unique way to present a disc of wedding photos for her clients. As we are always up for a challenge, this inspired us to think of a creative solution that we would love to share with you!

Materials:
- Alex Mae Tree of Love Laser-cut card + Kraft Envelope (also available in white)
- Alex Mae POCKETme Kraft 154mm
- Double-sided tape (we used Alex Mae’s STICKme 9mm x 25M)
- Cream board, printed with your choice of words/images, cut to 148mm x 148mm
- Patterned paper of your choice, cut to 148mm x 148mm (we used Greenwich in Spring matte paper)

Firstly, attach the pocket using double sided tape by folding the tabs and adhere to the left-hand side of the folded card (laser-cut side). We recommend leaving it overnight under something heavy for it to cure. Slip the patterned paper inside the pocket and use the tape to secure the top of the paper to the card. On the opposite side (blank-side), adhere the board with your pre-printed text (or hand-written message if you like the more personal touch!). Insert your disc, pop it in an envelope and it’s ready to be sent off to it’s new home!

There are many ways you can use Fabric Tape – so we thought we’d share a few ways you can decorate your next event using the versatile cuties – read on.

1. Seal it
Add an extra touch by sealing your envelope with a strip of Fabric Tape! This is a perfect way to avoid paper cuts, dry mouths and yucky after tastes, and using a bit of tape ensures important pieces of information stays inside the envelope.

2. Dress it up
It’s all in the details – including the food! We’ve used little toothpicks, but you can use them on skewers and straws for your muffins/cupcakes/cakes/canapés/drink glasses….

3. Spruce it up
Take a (boring) tag, tape it up and get a cute (and easy) tag! We’ve done a few – they’re perfect for weddings and events as a cute way to display seating.

4. Label it
Take your bonbonnieres to another level and personalise them using the pretty tapes! Whether it’s to tie in with your colours or show ownership of the favours, you really can’t go wrong with a strip of tape.

This is a super cute and simple Christmas craft idea to do with the kids during the upcoming school holidays or for those of you who just can’t help but be crafty yourselves!

Supplies Needed:

Cardboard Boxes

Pretty Ribbon

Glue

Metal Ruler

Blade or Scissors

White Pen (we used ZIG Posterman Extra Fine White $5.95 – available in store!)

Step One:

Create a template out of scrap paper in the shape of a basic house (or in any shape you desire – why not try a star or gingerbread man!) Using your template, trace around it onto your recycled cardboard box.

Step Two:

Using your blade or scissors cut your shape out of the cardboard.

Step Three

Now it’s time to decorate! We used a white pen to decorate our cardboard gingerbread houses – but why not try metallic silver or gold or even some fun coloured glitter pens! (pop in store to check out our range!)

Step Four:

Once you have finished decorating your cardboard shapes, attach a ribbon loop to the back using a tiny bit of glue! You now have a sweet little handmade recycled cardboard decoration to add to your tree!

Enjoy!

Spring is just around the corner and we can’t wait! Here’s a DIY inspired by Creative Bug who does a few different versions to make a paper bouquet. We’ve tweaked it a little bit, used twigs/branches for ours. It’s quite easy to customise this tutorial to make flowers in all shapes and forms!

Gather your supplies!
You will need:

Scissors

Twigs/branches

Paper (You can use any kind of paper – a medium stock would be best, thin enough to crumple but thick enough to hold its shape. We up-cycled some Japanese paper from a previous project – the paper is amazing and looks so pretty!)

Double sided sticky tape

Glue/Hot glue gun + Fabric Tape (optional, depending on how well your paper holds with the tape)

Step 1:
Select a twig or branch which lies in a position you are happy with. Try select one with ends which stick upwards as you will be attaching the flowers on those.

Step 2:
Cut a long strip of paper contrasting to the colours of your petals to make the centre of your flower.
Make small cuts along one side but leave enough space to stick your tape on (We folded the paper over a few times before cutting to save time).

Step 3:
Using the double sided sticky tape, wrap your paper around the end of a twig, making sure the loose strips are facing up, and that the paper hides the end of the twig.

Step 4:
Cut up some petals! Essentially you want to cut pieces that look like wavy-edged pyramids.
Cut them out in a few sizes - you’ll get a feel for how they work after you make your first one. We used 5 – 6 petals per flower.

Step 5:
Place a strip of double sided sticky tape onto the base of one of the smaller petals. Attach the petal to the twig – you want to be ‘pinching’ the petal on.

Step 6:
Repeat step 5, going around to cover the centre piece. Continue to do so, using bigger petals as you go.

Step 7:

We have these pretty leaves in-store to do all sorts of crafts, but you can make your own using green paper – here’s how to fold them to give them a more 3-d look:

We placed a few on the twig using quick dry adhesive (hot glue gun would work fine)

Ta-da!

In preparing for our new window (stay tuned!) we created these simple yet beautiful hexagon wreaths made from sticks and paper leaves (available in store). These wreaths would look super cute hung on your front door or used to decorate a wedding or event! They are easy to make and will last forever!

What you will need:

An assortment of sticks from your garden

Natural Twine

Paper Leaves (available in store – Pack of 21 for $5.95)

Thin Wire

Wire Cutters

Stapler

Scissors

STEP ONE: PREPARE YOUR FRAME

Select six sticks of relevant size and thickness and snap them so they are all the same length. The length of your sticks will determine the size of your finished wreath. Our sticks were approximately 20cm in length.

Once you have prepared your sticks, lay them out on a flat surface in the shape of a hexagon. The ends of all the sticks will need to overlap where they intersect on each corner of the hexagon so you can fasten them together in the next step.

STEP TWO: SECURING YOUR FRAME TOGETHER

Cut your twine to approximately 30cm in length (allowing you plenty to wrap around and secure your sticks). Start off with one of the corners of the hexagon where the sticks overlap, tie a double knot around both sticks. With the remaining twine continue to wrap it around the sticks using a criss cross method between both sticks. Finish securing your sticks by tying another double knot. Trim the end of your twine.

Repeat this step for all corners of the hexagon until you have completely secured your frame together.

STEP THREE: PREPARE YOUR PAPER LEAVES

Using your paper leaves, create little bundles of two-three leaves and staple together. By creasing and adding a fold to the paper leaves you can create a more realistic three-dimensional look. You will need enough bundles of leaves to cover your wreath. {TIP – When stapling your leaves together make sure the flat side of the staple is at the back of the leaves, you will find out in the following steps why}

STEP FOUR: ATTACH YOUR PAPER LEAVES TO YOUR FRAME

Before you can begin to attach your paper leaves to your frame, you will need to use your wire cutters to cut short lengths of wire (approximately 8-10cm long). Cut enough lengths of wire for however many paper leaf bundles you made in the previous step.

Using one of the lengths of wire you just cut, thread it under the flat side of the staple on the back of your bundles of leaves. The wire will help you to attach your leaves to the frame. Secure the wire around the sticks of your frame, you may have to wrap the wire around a few times to ensure it stays in place (if you have excess wire remaining you can use the wire cutters to trim the ends).

Continue this until you have attached all of your leaves onto your frame.

STEP FIVE: FINISHED!

You should now have in front of you a beautiful hexagon wreath made from sticks and paper leaves! Hang your wreath on your front door or make a few and use them as decorations at a wedding or event! They are simple and effective, and budget friendly!

If you make one, we would love to see it! Email photos of your creations to mail@sarbe.com.au

In preparation for our newest window display I have been getting messy with Papier-mâché! If you have been in store this week you may have seen our new window! Eight hot air balloons, each hand made using balloons, newspaper, Japanese Washi Paper and a lot of glue! While I was making these, it took me back to the days in primary school when I was first introduced to this creative method of art. We spent a whole week coating balloons in newspaper, painting them and added bits and pieces to create our very own little piggy bank!

With this fond memory, I went rummaging through all my old things and look who I found!

Here is my little creation from grade 3 and I love that 13 years later I am still using the same methods of papier-mâché for my own projects. Papier-mâché is a great foundation for any physical 3D project you may be working on as it creates a base framework from where you can expand your model by sculpting a more defined shape, adding embellishments and other decorative features or simply just painting it to create your desired effect. Papier-mâché is commonly used today to make face masks or piñatas, but in the past, before we had access to plastics and moulds, this form of art was used to create parade floats, set designs for theatre productions and also used in the process of making puppets.

This little project also got me thinking about what other amazing things you can create with this basic foundation! In my search I found this awesome armchair designed and created by Majid Asif. With 120 layers of newspaper built up over the mould of an inflatable chair, this art piece displays a very innovative and creative way to up cycle old newspapers!

Such an amazing work of art, but you don’t have to go to this extreme to play with papier-mâché! Click on the images below to find a few tutorials on different things you can make at home! If the kids are complaining about being bored, this is a great activity that will keep them occupied for hours!
